Seeing as though it is Breast Cancer Awareness month, we thought we would share our favourite breast cancer charities with you all. Let's kick it off with... CoppaFeel!
CoppaFeel! is an amazing breast cancer awareness charity that we think all women need to know about.
This charity is unique in the sense that it does not raise money to help cancer research, it raises money to help spread awareness of breast cancer. They aim to teach women how to thoroughly check their breasts for the signs and symptoms that can be associated with breast cancer.
If you visit the ever-so-quirky CoppaFeel! website you will find a short and sweet statement which states exactly what it is they do...
'We’re on a mission to stamp out late detection of breast cancer. We ensure that you know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, know what your boobs look and feel like normally, check your boobs regularly throughout your lifetime and have the confidence to see a doctor if you notice anything that doesn’t feel right for you.'
Sounds like an amazing charity, right? CoppaFeel! was all made possible by Kris Hallenga, who I must say, is one of the most inspirational women I have ever come across.
Kris was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, in 2008 at only 23 years of age. After discovering a lumpy boob, Kris went straight to her GP to be told that at her young age it would be nothing but 'hormonal changes.' Accepting the idea, Kris went travelling for 6 months only to return home, still having a lumpy boob. After a second visit to the GP, they discovered that Kris had stage four breast cancer, the cancer had spread to her spine and was too late for a cure. It took 8 months to find a diagnosis.
After radiotherapy and five gruelling months of chemotherapy Kris decided that something needed to be done. Kris couldn't help but feel as though if she was made more aware of checking her breasts at a young age then the cancer could have been detected earlier and her life could have been saved. Rather than labelling breast cancer as an 'older woman's' disease Kris took upon herself to make a change and created CoppaFeel!
Kris and her team now travel the country, devoting their time into teaching women (and men) on how to 'coppafeel' of their breasts to get to know their boobs, how they feel and what they look like in the hopes of saving lives. Now you can see why we think everyone should know about this charity!
So, the Brastop team and I encourage you all, no matter what age, to not only start checking your breasts regularly but to help spread the CoppaFeel! message.
Worried you will forget to check your breasts? The girls at CoppaFeel! have you got you covered with a very handy reminder system, via text or email!
