wearing bra causing breast saggingCan Wearing A Bra Actually Cause Sagging?

Every once in a while the subject of boobs pops up in the news and of course, here at Brastop, it piques our interest. And last week saw a story come to light that seems to have rattled everyone's cages...

French scientist Jean-Denis Rouillon has been studying and analysing 300 boobs of women aged 18-35 for 16 years and has come to the controversial conclusion that wearing a bra is actually pretty pointless. Apparently wearing a bra might actually be detrimental to your boobs, and that they may in fact cause more sagging than wearing a bra.

Cue the silence...

Let's face it, the claims should be taken with a pinch of salt. Actually, make that a fistful of salt. Before I even clicked on the link, the title had me shaking my head. There's just something about the phrase "scientific research" that makes me roll my eyes, not helped by the fact that the Doctor himself has said that the tests are preliminary and further investigation may be necessary. Another 16 years of looking at boobs perhaps, Dr Rouillon? And of course there's the fact that "the women involved were not a representative sample of the population". We feel that may be the understatement of the century. I wonder how many DD+ ladies were part of this investigation...

Personally, I'm not so sure of his theory. Of course I'm no scientist and for all I know wearing a bra could have the opposite effect on sagging but then again, I'm thinking pigs may fly. Being a 30G/GG, my boobs are QUITE heavy, and I'm sure plenty of Brastop customers feel, quite literally, the same. Logic tells me that taking away daily support will actually have a negative effect on "the suspension system of the breasts" that Dr Rouillon says "degenerates" when wearing a bra. Whichever one of us is right, are bras really unnecessary?

Of course bras AREN'T a necessity and many go without. Going without a bra, regardless of size, isn't a life or death scenario, obviously, but whilst it may be seen as a personal choice to go with or without a bra, for many women, going braless isn't an option. Whether you're conscious of nipples showing through clothing, the shape or size of your boobs or, like many of us, it's just a bouncing, painful nightmare, for many wearing a bra IS a need. I'll put my hands up, sometimes I go without a bra. Generally speaking it's because I'm yet to find a strapless bra to wow me, and if a dress (strapless or not) is tight enough, I'll go without but it's not a common occurance. When you reach a certain bra size, going without a bra can be impractical at best and agony at worse. That's something which seems to be overlooked here...

All of that aside, I ENJOY wearing lingerie. Nothing puts a smile on my face more than a beautiful set. My plethora of bras (that are slowly overtaking my room) just goes to show how much I love wearing a gorgeous set. From the way it looks, to the way it makes me feel, and the wonders it can do to my cleavage...there's not a lot I don't like about bras. It's going to take a lot for me to give up on my beloveds, and by a lot I mean Ryan Gosling.

This study has without a doubt got us all talking. It's hard to really agree or even understand it when you wear a bra size which you feel limits you to going braless, it's not advice we're going to be taking on anytime soon. The important thing is, no matter what size you are, as long as you're happy then that's all there is to it. To those who don't go braless, I feel you. And to those who can go braless? I envy you! My boobs will be staying supported thanks to some helpful bras and I won't be testing this sagging theory any time soon, but that's not to say there's some truth in it...

What do you think about the studies? And do you ever go braless?
