  • Guide to Buying Your First Bra

Of all the changes going on in your teenage years, we think that wearing your first bra is one of the most important, although admittedly we are a little biased here at Brastop! If it’s time for you to go shopping for your first bra, or if you’re after some advice when buying for your daughter then we have all of the information you’re going to need right here. From sizing tips, to styles and even colours, this article is here to de-mystify the bra-buying process completely as we welcome you to a world of bra-wearing joy!

  • Picking your bra for the first time
  • The First Things To Consider

First things first, bras are never-ever there to make you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious - quite the opposite in fact! Your first bra should make your clothes look their best, give you the correct levels of support and stop your nipples showing under clothes.

Don’t worry about when other girls your age are buying a bra and remember that every single development is different so there’s no set, defined age when you should be buying yours! With regard to timings, you should be buying your first bra as soon as there is a sign of breast tissue, regardless of your age.
You should be steering clear of underwired bras at first as these can damage growing breast tissue along with pain and discomfort. You can move onto these when your boobs are fully developed.

  • Fitting Tips

With bra fitting, one size does not fit all! Your first bra should fit snugly around your back when fitted on the tightest hook so that it can be loosened as your bust gets bigger.

The most important factor to consider when choosing the right size bra to start with is that the cup size is relative to the back size. This means that a 28D will have smaller cups than a 34D. Depending on the back size that fits you, you should then be choosing a cup size that completely encapsulates your boobs and doesn’t cut in underneath your arms. For more information on this, take a look at our dedicated bra fitting guide.

  • Choosing The Best Bra for You

As we previously mentioned, it’s very important not to be buying an underwired bra when your boobs are growing, but fear not, that doesn’t mean that your choices are limited!

There are a number of non-wired bras available in a whole range of colours and styles, from plain blacks, whites and nudes which are flattering underneath clothes, to bright colours and pastels if you’re after something pretty!  If your boobs are in their early stages of development then it might be good to start with a crop top or a bralette as these alternatives are less structured than a traditional bra. Non-padded options are great for a starter bra as they offer light support for the growing bust, but if you would like additional modesty or support then padded options are also available. Remember that it’s very important to buy a sports bra too if you are taking part in any physical activity as you want as little strain on your boobs as possible.
